Evaluating UAS Autonomy Operations Software In Simulation
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe a software simulation test bed for evaluating Concepts of Operation (CONOPS) for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) flying earth science missions. The Mission Operational Concept Evaluation Framework (MOCEF) aids in the rapid evaluation of proposed system automation designs, including intelligent controllers for vehicles, sensor payloads, and decision support systems, on a wide range of missions. Such broad evaluation is prohibitively expensive when limited to physical experiments and real missions. MOCEF allows evaluation of automation concepts in multiple mission scenarios operating in a wide range of environments. It records mission metric parameters such as the quality of sensor data obtained, flight time, stress on the vehicles, and air traffic control rules infringed or invoked. This information can be fed into specific mission metric formulas to rate performance and into the Google Earth tool

Evaluating the Impact of Deploying Unrestricted Unmanned Aircraft Systems in the National Airspace
Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) can be used for scientific, emergency management, and defense missions, among others. The existing federal air regulations, procedures, and technologies do not allow routine UAS access to the National Airspace System (NAS), with the UAS being flown primarily within restricted airspaces. The current Certificate of Waiver of Authorization (COA) process requirement ...
متن کاملManagement System for Unmanned Aircraft System Teams
This thesis investigates new schemes to improve the operability of heterogeneous Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) teams through the exploitation of inter-vehicular communications. Releasing ground links from unnecessary data exchanges saves resources (power, bandwidth, etc) and alleviates the inherent scalability problem resulting from the increase in the number of UAS to be controlled simultane...
متن کاملEvaluating technologies and mechanisms for the automated/autonomous operation of UAS in non-segregated airspace
This paper focuses on several aspects of the UASATM interaction that have not been previously addressed: separation assurance, contingency reaction and lost link procedures; as well as the evaluation of the trade-off between automated and autonomous UAS operations. These aspects will definitely determine the effectiveness of the UAS integration performing the aforementioned surveillance mission...
متن کاملMultiple-Scenario Unmanned Aerial System Control: A Systems Engineering Approach and Review of Existing Control Methods
The use of unmanned aerial systems (UASs) in both the public and military environments is predicted to grow significantly. As the demand for UASs grows, the availability of more robust and capable vehicles that can perform multiple mission types will be needed. In the public sector, the demand will grow for UASs to be used for agriculture, forestry, and search and rescue missions. Militaries co...

This paper summarizes background fundamentals of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) as related to terminology and diverse applications. This information is followed by a discussion on the challenges that need to be overcome in order to take full advantage of what UAS may offer, focusing on control system design, autonomy and cooperation. A UAS simulator currently under development at the Technical...
